Reaction Steps
5-Cyclopropyl-4-[2-methoxy-4-(methylsulphenyl)benzoyl]-isoxazole (1.0 g) was added to a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol (prepared from sodium (0.12 g) and ethanol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours, poured into water and acidified to pH 1 by addition of hydrochloric acid. The resultant suspension was extracted with ether, washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was triturated with ether and filtered to give 2-cyano-3-cyclopropyl-1-[2-methoxy-4-(methylsulphenyl)phenyl]propan-1,3-dione, COMPOUND 651, (0.88 g) as a cream solid, m.p. 108°-109° C.
