To a solution of ethylenediamine (2.93 mL) in toluene (30 mL) is slowly added a solution of 4-cyano-5,8-dimethyl-6-isothiocyanatoquinoline (2.1 g, 8.78 mmol) in toluene (100 mL). The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature overnight. The solid which forms is filtered, washed well with toluene, and dried to afford 6-[N'-(2-aminoethyl)thioureido]-4-cyano-5,8-dimethylquinoline.
