Procedure
A solution of 3-benzyloxy-2-hydroxymethylpyridine (0.25 g, 1.16 mmol) in chloroform (15 ml) was treated with manganese dioxide (0.45 g, 6.34 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to reflux and held at reflux for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was then filtered through Celite and evaporated to give a yellow gum. This gum was purified by chromatography (EtOAc/CH2Cl2) to give 3-benzyloxy-2-pyridinecarbaldehyde as a colourless gum (0.15 g, 62%).
