Procedure
To 20.35 g of 1,1,1-trichloro-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-4-pentene was added 23.8 g of thionyl chloride. The resulting solution was heated at 80°-90° for one hour. After cooling, the excess thionyl chloride was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was fractionally distilled. A fraction weighing 5.9 g; bp, 100°/2.8 mm, was analyzed by vapor phase chromatography and mass spectrometry. The major component of the fraction was identified as 1,1,1-trichloro-4-methyl-4-penten-2-yl chlorosulfinate.
