Reaction Steps
To a solution of L-valine methylester in THF (25 mL) was slowly added 1,3-propanesultone (2.49 g, 19.9 mmol). The solution was stirred at reflux for 2 hours. The reaction was cooled to room temperature. The solid was collected by filtration, washed with acetone (2×30 mL). It was dried in the vacuum oven (50° C.) affording the title compound (2.52 g, 50%). 1H NMR (D2O, 500 MHz) δ ppm 3.92 (m, 1H), 3.75 (s, 3H), 3.13 (t, 2H, J=6.8 Hz), 2.88 (t, 2H, J=6.8 Hz), 2.24 (m, 1H), 2.06 (m, 2H)), 0.96 (d, 3H, J=6.8 Hz), 0.88 (d, 3H, J=6.8 Hz). 13C (D2O, 125 MHz) δ ppm 169.35, 65.85, 55.61, 48.14, 45.59, 29.48, 21.32, 18.25, 16.57. [α]D=+9.6° (c=0.0014 in water), ES-MS 254 (M+1).
