Formic acid (1.1 ml) was added to acetic anhydride (2.2 ml) which was cooled to 0°-5°. The mixture was heated at 50° for 15 minutes, cooled to 0° and added to 1,4-dihydro-1(2-hydroxyethyl)-7-methyl-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid (1.5 g) in pyridine (12 ml), also cooled to 0°. The mixture warmed to room temperature and after 1 hour the solid was collected, washed with pyridine and dried, m.p. 213°-214° (85%).
