Reaction Steps

A solution of 2-(4-chlorobenzyl)-3-(4-hydroxybenzoyl)benzofuran (2.0 g., 5.5 mmol.) of 50 ml. of toluene is added to a slurry of 0.5 g. of a 57% sodium hydride dispersion (0.01 mol.) in 5 ml. of toluene. The reaction mixture is refluxed for 10 minutes, then 0.82 g. (5.5 mmol.) of 2-diethylaminoethyl chloride is added and the mixture is heated at 90° for four hours. The mixture is filtered and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound.
