To a solution of 0.700 g (2.41 mmol) of methyl 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-methylphenoxy)acetate (Example 4, Step B) in 10 mL of methanol, stirred at 0° C. (ice-bath) was added anhydrous NH3 for 45 minutes. The reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred overnight. The reaction mixture was then concentrated in vacuo and afforded 0.658 g (99%) of title compound.
