Procedure

A solution of 250 mg of the methyl ester from Example 1, Step (i) in 25 mL of methanol and 25 mL of sodium hydroxide in water (10%) was stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The methanol was removed in vacuo and the pH adjusted to 4 with hydrochloric acid which caused the acid to precipitate. The product was collected by filtration: m.p. 181°-182° C.; MS(FAB) m/e(rel. intensity 392 (60, M+H+), 200(100); HRMS. Calcd for M+H: 392.0933; found: 392.0967.
