Reaction Steps

To 0.03 mol of didecyldimethylammonium chloride dissolved in 50 mL distilled water was added 0.03 mol of mandelic acid and 0.03 mol of NaOH. The mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 2 h. After cooling to room temperature, 60 mL of chloroform was added. Chloroform phase was washed with distilled water until chloride ions were no longer detected using AgNO3. The obtained mandelate with 96% yield is insoluble in water and was dried in vacuum.
