Reaction Steps
60 mL of acetic acid was added to 5.0 g (33 mmol) of N-methyl-2-nitroaniline and 5.9 g (33 mmol) of N-bromosuccinimide. The mixture was heat refluxed for 7 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction solution was poured into 500 mL of water, and a solid that precipitated by this operation was collected by filtration. The solid was dissolved in ethyl acetate, and dried over magnesium sulfate. After filtering the solution, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was dried at room temperature under reduced pressure to obtain 7.1 g of 4-bromo-N-methyl-2-nitroaniline as an orange solid (yield: 93%).
