Benzenesulfonyl chloride (0.661 mL, 5.15 mmol) was added to a solution of compound 1-C (0.87 g, 4.69 mmol) in pyridine (10 mL) at 0° C. The ice bath was removed and the solution was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was partitioned between 2 N HCl and dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate and the solvent evaporated in vacuo. The residue was pre-absorbed on silica gel and purified by flash column chromatography, eluting with a gradient of ethyl acetate (10-50%) in heptane, to afford compound 1-D as a colorless solid (1.19 g, 88%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): δ 6.96 (s, 1H), 7.25-7.34 (m, 2H), 7.44-7.49 (m, 2H), 7.55-7.66 (m, 3H), 7.84-7.88 (m, 2H); MS: m/z 290.1 (MH+).
