Procedure
To a solution of methyl 6-(6-methoxy-2-phenyl-1H-indol-3-ylmethyl)pyridine-2-carboxylate (1.2 g) in methanol/tetrahydrofuran (6 mL/6 mL) was added sodium borohydride (305 mg) at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3.5 hours. To the reaction mixture was added a saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution. The organic layer was separated, washed with a saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution and saturated brine successively, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain the title compound (1.16 g). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ ppm: 3.86 (3H, s), 4.00-4.10 (1H, m), 4.41 (2H, s), 4.70-4.78 (2H, m), 6.76 (1H, dd, J=2.3, 8.8 Hz), 6.91 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 6.96-7.04 (2H, m), 7.31-7.38 (2H, m), 7.39-7.59 (5H, m), 8.05 (1H, br s).
