5-methoxy-2-methylpyridine-1-oxide (6 g, 43.1 mmol) and nitric acid (18.4 mL, 431 mmol, 1.48 g/mL) was added to AcOH (50 mL) and the reaction was stirred at 90° C. for 6 h. The mixture was concentrated (1/4) and neutralized at 0° C. was addition of ammonium hydroxide. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc, washed with brine and water, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated. The product crystallised during concentration. tR: 0.50 min (LC-MS 2); ESI-MS: 185.1 [M+H]+ (LC-MS 2).
