A solution of thiophene-3,4-dicarboxylic acid (5.97 g, 34.77 mmol) in acetic anhydride (150 mL) was stirred overnight at 140° C. The reaction mixture was subsequently concentrated to yield thiophene-3,4-dicarboxylic anhydride as a brown solid which was used without further purification. GC-Ms: 154; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, ppm) δ: 8.09(s, 2H).
