Procedure
A suspension of 1-acetoxy-3-chloro-2-propanone (4.52 g) and guanylthiourea (3.55 g) in acetone (100 ml) is stirred at room temperature for 64 hours. The precipitated crystals are filtered to give 2-guanidino-4-acetoxymethylthiazole hydrochloride hemihydrate (6.2 g) as crystals melting at 170°-172° C.
