Procedure

2-(2-Methoxybenzylthio)ethylamine (1.18 g) and 2-methylthio-5-(3-pyridylmethyl)-4-pyrimidone (1.0 g) were fused together at 170° for 50 minutes and allowed to cool. Water was added and the mixture was extracted at pH 13 with chloroform (discarded), adjusted to pH 7 and extracted a second time with chloroform. The second extract was evaporated to give 2-[2-(2-methoxybenzylthio)-ethylamino]-5-(3-pyridylmethyl)-4-pyrimidone as an oil which was treated with hydrogen chloride in ethanol and recrystallised from ethanol-ether to give the dihydrochloride m.p. 180°-183°.
