1-[2-(4-Benzyloxyphenylamino)-5-methoxyphenyl]ethanone [XIII; R=5-CH3O, OR°=4-OCH2C6H5, R"=H] was prepared by reduction of 2-(4-benzyloxyphenylamino)-5-methoxybenzoic acid (Example 1A, part a) with methyllithium according to the procedure of Example 5, part (a), and obtained in the form of a yellow-orange powder, m.p. 80°-81.5° C. when recrystallized from toluene.
