Aqueous 1% sodium hydroxide solution (6 ml) was added to a solution of 2-[1-(ethoxyimino)propyl]-3-hydroxy-5-mesitylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (0.42 g; 1.28 mmole) in acetone (50 ml). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for a period of 5 minutes and then benzoyl chloride (0.2 g) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred for a further period of 15 minutes and then the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure using a rotary evaporator. The product was purified by chromatography over silica gel (eluant dichloromethane) to give 3-benzoyloxy-2-[1-(ethoxyimino)propyl]-5-mesitylcyclohex-2-en-1-one (0.38 g; 68.6%) as a pale yellow oil.
