The catalyst samples as described in Examples 4 and 5 were also tested for activity and selectivity in the vapor phase alkylation of toluene with ethylene to produce p-ethyl toluene. At a WHSV of 1.0-1.2 g toluene/gm catalyst/hr and a toluene:ethylene molar ratio of 2.5-2.8:1.0 the liquid product was collected over an 8-16 hour period for each of the reaction temperatures 400° C. and 475° C. The data are tabulated below.
