1-hydrazinophthalazine hydrochloride (395 mg; 2 mmol) is dissolved in 5 ml of water. To this an aqueous solution of α-ketoglutaric acid (1 g; 7 mmol) is added and the reaction mixture is allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The solid precipitate is filtered off and dried in vacuo to yield 510 mg of 1-hydrazinophthalazine α-ketoglutarate hydrazone (88% theoretical yield).
