To a slurry of 3-[4-(pyrimidin-2-yl)phenyl]furan and Na2CO3 (46 mg, 0.44 mmol) in methanol (0.8 mL) and benzene (0.8 mL) at −10° C. was added bromine (22 μL, 0.41 mmol) dropwise. The reaction mixture was stirred at −10° C. for 1 h, diluted with ethyl acetate, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. Purification by medium pressure liquid chromatography (SiO2, 2:1 hexanes/ethyl acetate) gave 95 mg (75%) of the title compound. MS 285 (M+H)+.
