The free base was liberated from the hydrochloride (15 g.) by basification of a solution in water (150 ml.) with solid sodium carbonate. The aqueous mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×100 ml.) and the extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give N-[2-(benzylamino)ethyl]-2-phenylacetamide as an oil (13.0 g.), which slowly crystallised.
