Procedure

To a mixture of 0.500 g (1.53 mmole) of 6,7-dihydro-9-fluoro-8-(imidazol-1-yl)-5-methyl-1-oxo-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolizine-2-carboxylic acid (from Example 1) and 10 ml of water was added 15.3 ml of 0.1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide (1.53 mmole). The mixture was filtered, an equal volume of ethanol added, and the solution evaporated to dryness to give tan crystals of sodium 6,7-dihydro-9-fluoro-8-(imidazol-1-yl)-5-methyl-1-oxo-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolizine-2-carboxylate hydrate, m.p.>250° C.
