Procedure
To 6.0 g of 5-bromo-6-fluoro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinaldine was added 50 ml of acetic anhydride and one drop of concentrated sulfuric acid. The solution was heated on a steam bath for two hours, then cooled to about 20° C. The solution was basified with 10% sodium hydroxide solution. The solution was extracted with chloroform, and the chloroform extracts were evaporated to provide an oil which was distilled in vacuo to provide N-acetyl-5-bromo-6-fluoro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinaldine. The structural assignment was supported by nuclear magnetic resonance spectral analysis.
