Ethyl 2-[2-mesylamino-3-(2-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]-acetate (0.8 g) was dissolved in 1N-sodium hydroxide (10 ml) by heating, and the solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 10 minutes. To the reaction mixture was added water (20 ml), and the mixture was washed with diethyl ether. The aqueous solution was adjusted to pH 2 with conc. hydrochloric acid. The precipitating crystals were collected by filtration, washed with water and recrystallized from benzene to give 2-[2-mesylamino-3-(2-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetic acid (0.58 g). mp 159°-163° C.
