A mixture of N-cyano-N'-[2-((3-hydroxy-2-pyridyl)-methylthio)ethyl]-S-methylisothiourea (4.8 g) and excess methylamine in ethanol was allowed to stand at room temperature for 2.5 hours. Following concentration under reduced pressure, the residue was chromatographed on a column of silica gel with ethyl acetate containing 15% isopropyl alcohol as eluant and recrystallisation from isopropyl alcohol-petroleum ether gave N-cyano-N'-[2-((3-hydroxy-2-pyridyl)methylthio)ethyl]-N"-methylguanidine (2.4 g), m.p. 146°-148°.
