A suspension of 4-bromomethyl-2′-formylbiphenyl (I) (1.0 g, 3.6 mmol), 2-n-propyl-4-methyl-6-(1′-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzimidazole (1.1 g, 3.6 mmol) and NaOH (0.15 g, 3.6 mmol) in 25 ml of N,N-dimethylacetamide is stirred at room temperature under argon atmosphere for 20 hours. Reaction mixture into poured into 160 ml of water and extracted 4 times with 40 ml of ethyl acetate. Combined organic extracts are dried over MgSO4 and evaporated under reduced pressure. Crude amorphous product is obtained in yield: 3.01 g.
