A suspension of 4-bromomethyl-2′-formylbiphenyl (I) (1.0 g, 3.6 mmol), 2-n-propyl-4-methyl-6-(1′-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzimidazole (1.1 g, 3.6 mmol) and K2CO3 (0.5 g, 3.6 mmol) in 23 ml of N,N-dimethylacetamide is stirred at room temperature under argon atmosphere for 23 hours. Reaction mixture is poured to 160 ml of water and extracted 4 times with 40 ml of ethyl acetate. Combined organic extracts are dried over MgSO4 and evaporated under reduced pressure to obtain crude amorphous product. Yield: 3.03 g.
