Sodium borohydride (0.27 g, 7.17 mmol) was added to a stirred suspension of 1-(3-phenyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridin-2-yl)ethanone (0.85 g, 3.58 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) at 0° C. under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was stirred for 15 minutes then poured into saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution and extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The combined EtOAc extracts were washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a white solid (0.74 g, 87%). LCMS (method H): Rt 1.76 min, [M+H]+ 240.
