Tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0.8 g) was added to a mixture of 4.2 g of 3-ethoxyphenylboronic acid, 5.0 g of 5-bromo-2-fluoronitrobenzene and 22 ml of 2 M sodium carbonate solution in 50 ml of toluene and 50 ml of ethanol. The mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours. The cooled mixture was concentrated, water was added and the mixture was extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water, brine, dried, and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel (5% ethyl acetate in hexane) to give 5.3 g (90% yield) of crude 4-fluoro-3′-ethoxy-3-nitrobiphenyl as a yellow oil.
