Procedure

A glass Parr vessel was charged with 10% palladium on carbon (1.0 g), methanol (75 mL), ethanol (75 mL) and methyl 3-[4-amino-2-ethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-7-yl]prop-2-enoate (approximately 4 g, 10.8 mmol). The vessel was evacuated and charged with hydrogen gas (40 psi, 2.8×105 Pa). The mixture was shaken at 50° C. for approximately 18 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to ambient temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to provide 3.55 g of methyl 3-[4-amino-2-ethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-7-yl]propanate as an off-white solid. MS (ESI) m/z 371 (M+H)+.
