A glass Parr vessel was charged with 10% palladium on carbon (0.4 g), methanol (75 mL) and 2-{2-[2-ethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-7-yl]ethenyl}-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione (1.9 g, 4.3 mmol). The vessel was evacuated and charged with hydrogen gas (40 psi, 2.8×105 Pa). The reaction was shaken at 50° C. for approximately 18 hours and then cooled to ambient temperature. The reaction mixture was filtered followed by concentration under reduced pressure to provide 1.9 g of 2-{2-[2-ethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-7-yl]ethyl}-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione as a bright yellow solid. MS (APCI) m/z 443 (M+H)+.
