A suspension of methyl 7-(ethyloxy)-3-methyl-6-(methylsulfonyl)-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate (2.92 g, 6.25 mmol), NBS (1.445 g, 8.12 mmol) and diphenylperoxyanhydride (0.151 g, 0.625 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (30 mL) was heated to 100° C. and stirred overnight. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give methyl 3-(bromomethyl)-7-(ethyloxy)-6-(methylsulfonyl)-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate. This material was used without further purification. MS (m/z) 548.0 (M+H+).
