A mixture of methyl 3-methyl-7-[(1-methylethyl)oxy]-6-(methylsulfonyl)-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate (2.97 g, 6.17 mmol), NBS (1.427 g, 8.02 mmol) and diphenylperoxyanhydride (0.149 g, 0.617 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (30 mL) was heated to 100° C. and stirred overnight. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure to give methyl 3-(bromomethyl)-7-[(1-methylethyl)oxy]-6-(methylsulfonyl)-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate. This material was used without further purification. MS (m/z) 562.0 (M+H+).
