A suspension of methyl 7-(ethyloxy)-3-methyl-6-[(1-methylethyl)sulfonyl]-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate (9.5 g, 19.17 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (4.09 g, 23.01 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (0.464 g, 1.917 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (100 mL) was heated to reflux (100° C.) overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to give methyl 3-(bromomethyl)-7-(ethyloxy)-6-[(1-methylethyl)sulfonyl]-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate. This material was used without further purification. MS (m/z) 576.0 (M+H+).
