To a solution of methyl 7-(ethyloxy)-6-fluoro-3-methyl-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate (9.35 g, 22.95 mmol) in dimethyl sulfoxide (150 mL) was added sodium ethanethiolate (6.44 g, 68.9 mmol) and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. Iodomethane (7.18 mL, 115 mmol) was added, and the mixture was stirred for 2 h. The mixture was diluted with water and extracted with methylene chloride. The organic extracts were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to afford methyl 7-(ethyloxy)-6-(ethylthio)-3-methyl-2-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-quinolinecarboxylate. This material was used without further purification. MS (m/z) 450.1 (M+H+).
