Reaction Steps

A solution containing 0.75 g of methanesulfonyl chloride in 25 mL of CH2Cl2 was added to a stirred solution containing 0.8 g (3.3 mmol) of 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2,5-dithienylpyrrole (XX) and 3 mL of triethylamine in 25 mL of methylene chloride (CH2Cl2) maintained at 0° C. under an inert argon gas atmosphere. The mixture was stirred for 2 hours at 0° C., followed by treatment with a solution containing 8 g (40 mmol) of potassium phthalimide in 50 mL of DMF. The resulting mixture was heated at 40° C. overnight. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was filtered, and the solvents of the filtrate evaporated in vacuo in the presence of with 20 g of SiO2 -60. The solid absorbed on the SiO2 was chromatographed on a 100 g column of SiO2 -60 that was equilibrated and eluted with a 1% dioxane-toluene solvent mixture. Fractions having volumes of 20 mL were collected, and fractions numbered 10 through 25, containing the product (XXI), were combined, then concentrated to yield 860 mg of an oil (64% yield). An analytical sample of compound XXI (mp 174°-175° C.) was recrystallized from diethyl ether.
