A 200 mg portion of 1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-[3-(phenoxymethyl)-1-piperazinyl]-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid was dissolved in a mixture of 0.6 ml of 37% formaldehyde and 0.75 ml of 90% formic acid, heated on a steam bath for 3 hours and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in 5 ml of water and 1N sodium hydroxide was added to pH 7. The resulting solid was collected, washed with water and dried, giving 188 mg of the desired product, mp 202°-204° C.
