To a solution of 3-(2-methyl-1-propenyl)benzonitrile (5.80 g) in methanol (50 ml) was added 10% palladium on activated carbon (1 g), and the mixture was stirred under hydrogen atmosphere (3 atm) at 25° C. for 1 hour. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated to give 3-isobutylbenzonitrile (5.52 g) as a pale yellow oil.
