Lithium aluminium hydride (0.345 g) was added to a solution of the ester so obtained in diethyl ether (70 ml) and the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 1 hour. Water (10 ml) was added dropwise and the mixture was filtered. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give (-)-2-(3-benzyloxy-5-fluorophenyl)butane-1,2-diol (2.2 g), as an oil.
