N-Benzyloxycarbonyl-glycine 1 (7.50 g, 35.9 mmol) and N-hydroxysuccinimide 2 (4.13 g, 35.9 mmol) were dissolved in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (60 cm3) and cooled to 0° C. (ice/water) under nitrogen. N,N′-Dicyclohexylcarbodimide (8.14 g, 39.5 mmol) was added and the solution stirred for 1.5 h and then placed in a refrigerator at −5° C. for 20 h. The solution was filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure to form a yellow oil. The oil was triturated with diethyl ether (30 cm3) to form succinimde 3 as a white solid. This solid was used subsequently without further purification.
