Procedure
An anhydrous MeOH solution (2.0 mL) of 3-phenyl-pyridine-2-carbaldehyde (38 mg, 0.21 mmol) (Iqbal, N. et al. J. Med. Chem. 1998, 41, 1827-1837) and (4-Amino-butyl)-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (40 mg, 0.21 mmol) was stirred overnight at room temperature, after which NaBH4 (16 mg, 0.41 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture stirred for an additional hour. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in CH2Cl2 (15 mL) and treated with saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (25 mL). The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with CH2Cl2 (2×15 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford {4-[(3-Phenyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-amino]-butyl}-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (59 mg, 0.17 mmol) as a yellow oil. The yellow oil was used without further purification.
