Procedure

C6H5—CH2O—CH2CH2OCH2CH2—CH(COOC2H5)2 (5 g) from Step B was dissolved in 200 ml of toluene and 29.5 ml of LiAlH4 (1 M in THF) was added at 0-5° C. After stirring overnight at room temperature, 1 ml of water was added followed by 1.0 ml of 15% NaOH and 3.0 ml of water. The insoluble material was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness. The product was purified by flash chromatography on a silica gel column eluted with ethyl acetate. Combined fractions were evaporated to dryness. The final product was dried under vacuum overnight.
