Procedure
A suspension of ethyl 6,9-dihydro-9-phenylmethyl-10-propyl-4H-pyrano[3,2-g]quinoline-2-carboxylate (1.8 g, 4.6 mmol) in 0.1 N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (46.9 ml) containing ethanol (10 ml) was heated at reflux for 6 hours. The mixture was cooled, filtered and the filtrate was acidified and filtered. The solid obtained was dried (in vacuo) at 80° to give the required acid as a yellow powder 0.6 g (32%) mp>250°.
