Procedure

A solution of diethyl 6-(N-methylamino)-4-oxo-10-propyl-4H-pyrano[3,2-g]quinoline-2,8-dicarboxylate (1.25 g) in acetic acid (25 ml) and acetic anhydride (25 ml) was refluxed for 12 hours, then the solution was poured into water, extracted with ethyl acetate and the extract washed with sodium bicarbonate solution, dried and evaporated to give an oil. The oil crystallised from ethanol to give the required amide, 0.56 g (41%) mp 164°-5° C.
