Procedure
Using the method of Example 137, 3-amino-4-[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethylamino]quinoline (from Example 46) was reacted with formic acid to provide 1-[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl]-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline. The product was dissolved in ethanol and hydrogen chloride was bubbled into the solution. The precipitate was separated by filtration, washed with ethanol and recrystallized from ethanol. The product was 1-[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl]-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline trihydrochloride hydrate, m.p. >250° C. Analysis: Calculated for C14H16N4.3 HCl.H2O: %C, 45.8; %H, 5.5; %N, 15.3: Found: %C, 46.0; %H, 5.2; %N, 15.5.
