To 70 ml of acetic anhydride was added 13.0 g (0.0539 mole) of 1-isobutyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-5-oxide. The solution was heated on a steam bath for 10 minutes, then allowed to cool. The precipitate was separated by filtration, washed with ethanol, and dried. Recrystallization from N,N-dimethylformamide provided 1-isobutyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline-4-ol, m.p. >300° C. Analysis: Calculated for C14H15N3O: %C, 69.7; %H, 6.3; %N, 17.4; Found: %C, 69.8; %H, 6.4; %N, 17.6.
