Procedure

A solution of ethyl 6-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(4-pyridyl)-5-pyrimidinecarboxylate (15 g) and aqueous potassium hydroxide (3.48 g, in 30 ml H2O) in ethanol (150 ml) was refluxed for 4.5 hours. After evaporating the solvent, the residue was dissolved in a suspension of water (150 ml) and chloroform (150 ml) under stirring. The separated aqueous layer was adjusted to pH 5.5 with 10% aqueous hydrochloride. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 6-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(4-pyridyl)-5-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid (12.3 g).
