Reaction Steps
To a suspension of 4.1 g of 5-oxo-6-phthalimido-2-(3-thienyl)perhydro-1,4-thiazepine [prepared as described in step (e) above] in 60 ml of dimethylformamide were added dropwise 2.2 g of t-butyl bromoacetate, followed by 593 mg of a 55% w/w suspension of sodium hydride in oil at 0° to -5° C. under a stream of nitrogen. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 20 minutes and then poured into a mixture of ethyl acetate and water. The ethyl acetate layer was separated, washed with water and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated off. The semi-solid residue was collected by filtration using ethyl acetate and diisopropyl ether, to yield 3.7 g of the title compound, melting at 157°-160° C. (with decomposition).
